Course Description:

Dental hygienists have important skills in health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and behavioral motivation that would allow them to provide effective tobacco use cessation services.” - CDHA position paper, 2004

We often work with patients who have a complex medical history and often present with risk factors that require an interdisciplinary approach. Through this course you will understand the importance of collaborating between other dental team members and other members of the interprofessional team, allowing you to increase patient awareness about oral health and the effects on our overall systemic health.

Join Whitney Foster RDH and Fatima Foster RRT as they take an interprofessionalism team approach to care, as you gain knowledge and the confidence when delivering smoking/tobacco cessation in clinical practice.

Objectives:

  • Identify components of interprofessionalism collaboration
  • Understand a dental hygienist’s role when implementing tobacco cessation
  • Obtain a better understanding of a Registered Respiratory Therapist, and their critical role as an interprofessional team member.
  • Review different types of tobacco and understand the effects on oral and overall health
  • Acquire strategies, and specific verbal skills when delivering tobacco cessation
  • Review current smoking guidelines in reference to Nicotine Replacement Therapies’ (NRTs) Products
