Oral Health Challenges and Systemic Well-Being in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients
CE Hours: 1 (online)
Online Date:
Friday, November 29th - 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM EST (9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PT)
Course Description:
This course delves into the complex oral health issues faced by individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and their broader implications on systemic well-being. This material provides a comprehensive understanding of the challenges CKD patients encounter. This course explores how CKD leads to a myriad of oral health complications, including periodontitis, dental plaque accumulation, enamel abnormalities, premature tooth loss, and xerostomia. The course discusses practical solutions to manage oral problems in CKD patients.Furthermore, the course addresses erosive tooth wear (ETW) and other oral manifestations associated with CKD, such as non-plaque-induced gingival redness, Morsicatio buccarum, mucosal petechiae, and Sialolithiasis. It underscores the significant association between severe oral inflammation and poor metabolic control in predialysis CKD patients, advocating for individualized approaches to enhance dental and oral hygiene, which can
substantially reduce oral inflammation in CKD patients.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the prevalence and primary causes of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) globally.
2. Identify the various oral health issues commonly associated with CKD, including periodontitis, dental plaque accumulation, enamel abnormalities, and xerostomia.
3. Explore the complications arising from hyposalivation in CKD patients, such as mouth burning, speech and chewing difficulties, plaque buildup, and oral infections.
4. Learn practical solutions for managing oral problems in CKD patients, including appropriate dental hygiene practices and preventive measures.
5. Recognize the significance of individualized approaches to improve dental and oral hygiene in CKD patients to reduce oral inflammation and enhance overall well-being.
Camilla is a dental professional with qualifications as both a dental hygienist and dentist, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Copenhagen. Her research has focused on essential areas of oral health: during her research year, Camilla led an interventional study targeting oral infections in patients with chronic kidney disease, while her Ph.D. centered on investigating the effect of an lozenge with arginine and probiotics to prevent dental caries. Currently, Camilla serves as a Clinical Research Manager at 3Shape, where she contributes to advancing dental technology through intraoral scanners (TRIOS).
