Course Description:

With so many options available to us as dental hygienists, it can feel overwhelming at times when it relates to what our perio program could look like.

A successful Perio program in your practice begins with a commitment from the entire hygiene team.  It is also essential to continually evaluate our current methods of assessment and treatment strategies, and explore other options that may improve treatment outcomes, and reduce systemic risk.

Join Lorraine as she dives deep into four stages that will help you design the ultimate periodontal program.

Content will include:

  • A review of  assessment strategies and the many risk factors that can affect oral and systemic health outcomes
  • Oral and genetic testing options
  • Adjunctive therapies that help reduce a pathogenic biofilm
  • Addressing chronic inflammation and the host response
  • A collaborative approach to care
  • An extensive review of Oral Probiotics, their benefits, and their role in sustaining health

Lorraine will share evidence-based research and protocols, multiple resources, and will take you through case studies and group activities to help you design an action plan to implement changes in your practice.

It is time to discover what is available and how we can take what is out there and implement into our care to really make positive change happen.

We look forward to unleashing the possibilities!

Positively influencing oral health… What does that look like to you?  Yes, oral health is critical to systemic wellness!  This has become a focus for optimal care.  Yet, do we consistently evaluate our current methods of assessment and treatment and introduce changes that can bring about improved, more sustainable treatment outcomes, as well as a reduction in systemic risk?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting something different.  A truly valuable and committed Dental Hygienist is never satisfied with the “status quo”.  We are oral-systemic detectives, constantly learning and evolving and applying what we learn to influence and improve client outcomes.   To aid you in this endeavour, in this course we are going to dive in deep with a “Four-Stage” approach!

Stage One - Assessment & Management Of Risk Factors:

A review of assessment strategies and the many risk factors that can affect results and systemic health with extra attention to high blood pressure, white coat hypertension, and diabetes.  We will also explore bacterial DNA testing as an independent risk factor.

Stage Two - Reduce Biofilm Burden:

We will explore many modalities that can assist you in your effort to “battle pathogenic biofilm”!

Stage Three - Addressing Chronic Inflammation and Host Response:

We will take an in depth look at chronic inflammation as it relates to several diseases, as well as an up close and personal discussion about Periostat® --the many benefits and when to recommend it!

Stage Four - Sustaining Health:

We will review treatment planning options for clinical conditions such as caries, periodontal disease and halitosis.   Oral Probiotics is a component of this stage, and I will  be including an extensive overview various strains, products and benefits of Oral Probiotics.

Lorraine will also provide you with a variety of supportive resources to help with documentation, with communication of treatment recommendations, and to help initiate collaboration with physicians for the overall health of our clients.
