HPV and Implications for Dentistry
CE Hours: 2
Part 1:
Understanding the Impact of HPV on Dentistry
Part 2:
Implementing Change in Our Oral/Oropharyngeal Cancer Screening Protocol
Course Description:
The emergence of a new type of head and neck cancer has exploded in the last 15 years, affecting younger males predominantly without the traditional and historic risk factors; the culprit, the Human papillomavirus (HPV). According to the CDC, nearly all sexually active adults will have an HPV infection in their lifetime. This is fueling an escalating rise in the incidence of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer. There are many questions arising due to this escalation. How is the virus transmitted and once an infection becomes active, will it ever go away? How does an infection transform into a malignancy? Who is at risk?
All of these questions and many more will be answered in a frank, open discussion complemented by a guided visual gallery of HPV lesions. High risk extraoral and intraoral anatomical areas will be reviewed as well as identifying the subtle life-saving signs that accompany HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer that are so often overlooked.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to;
• Understand critical statistical information regarding oral and oropharyngeal cancer that every dental professional needs to know
• Recognize the transformation pathway of HPV into a malignancy
